Sport is an integral part of what we do here at Aidanfield Christian School. We recognize it as being an important part of a child’s development as well as teaching lifelong skills such as team work, interpersonal and motor skills. We endeavour to give every child at Aidanfield as many opportunities as possible to integrate sport into their lives.
We are fortunate at Aidanfield to have big, wide open spaces where sport can happen. We have a basketball court, hockey field, football pitch, rugby field, artificial cricket pitch, an AstroTurf junior sports area and an on-site swimming pool. We also have a multi-purpose, state of the art sports facility, Ngā Puna Wai right at our door step.
One of our strengths for sport here at Aidanfield is the involvement and commitment that our teacher and parent community display. This involves coaching teams, helping with transport and more. We are always on the lookout for anyone who is keen and able to be a part of sport at Aidanfield in any way, even if this means coaching a team that your child is not a part of.
Sports from years 1-4 is all about laying a foundation of key skills that students will need as they transition into Upper Primary and Middle School sports. When they enter school, there is a focus on developing fine and gross motor skills, co-ordination and teamwork. The framework used for this is based on Sports Start resources and recommendations from Sport Canterbury. As they continue to develop these skills, we look to extend students and introduce more team games. An overview of the main areas of focus are large ball skills, small ball skills, team sports, gymnastics, athletics, running and fitness. A 5-10-minute fitness time is part of every junior classroom’s daily routine.
Junior school sport events:
Term 1 – Swimming Sports (Year 4 only)
Term 2 – Cross Country*
Term 3 – Athletics
Term 4 – Triathlon
*Students who place in these events have an opportunity to compete for our school in Christian School Zones.
These events partnered with explicit teaching of ‘need-to-know’ skills ensure that students are ready to begin competing in competitions for the sport of their choice, or at the very least, are able to confidently play the sports that they love.
Sport at years 5 – 10 is about continuing to develop the skills that students have learnt in the lower primary years with a shifting focus to learning interpersonal skills via sports. Students learn various sporting skills in their Physical Education classes and will get to apply these to our sport events and competitions. There are many opportunities for year 5 to 10 students to get involved in sport. We run four school wide events each year, with many other options throughout the year.
School wide sport events:
Term 1 – Swimming Sports*
Term 2 – Cross Country*
Term 3 – Athletics*
Term 4 – Triathlon
*Students who place in these events have an opportunity to compete for our school in South West Zones which leads onto the school in Canterbury events.
Our year 5 to 8 students are involved in a sport rotation each term, with a focus on learning skills from different sports and applying them to game situations. Students also have an option to be part of a travelling sport team that competes against other schools in the winter terms. Sports offered here are football, netball and hockey.
Year 9 to 10 students are involved in a weekly offsite sport option, with the sports offered changing each term. This typically runs on a Wednesday afternoon, usually beginning from 3:15pm. Our year 9 and 10 timetable reflect the commitment that our students have to sport as they often have to travel for this. Our school organizes transport to and from venues. Sports that have been run in the past are; netball, basketball, boxing, rock climbing, tennis, table tennis, badminton, ultimate frisbee and more. Sports are chosen by students each term. The four most popular sports will run each term.
